We are using DSI telemetry for measurement of EEG signals in freely moving animals. Alternatively, we want to use the same system along with electrical stimulations (with grass stimulator) for measurement of theta modulation. Objective is to study the effect of test compound on theta power and the recording will be done in anesthetized animal. Will the electrical stimulation disturb the telemetric signals?
The short answer is yes.
The long answer is: it depends on several factors.
1. What is the stimulus pattern and more importantly intensity?
2. Is it EEG or ECoG you wish to record?
I'd start with smallest possible current acceptable for your stimulation paradigm and watch "EEG" for artifacts synchronized with your stimuli. Also watch for any ECG/EKG changes.
As Martin already said - you will quite certainly see some artifacts in the EEG. But if you are only asking about the telemetric transmission of the signals than you should be able to avoid disturbances. You can check that easily by stimulating in a glass of NaCl next to your setup first . If this disturbs your signal already you need to shield the stimulator and its cables. But also I do not know about the details of the DSI telemetry system I would believe that won't be your biggest problem...
Most probably it will add to the noise level at EEG receiver. However, as the stimulating signal is usually knows (in time and frequency) it may be overcome by filtering.
