I think iPad or other tablets (inclusive kindle / eReader) can be used as text book but the adoption rates vary depending on the school / education stakeholders' decisions as they are some proponents and opponents of using tablet as text book according to their justified rationales. 

Think to make the go / no-go decision, stakeholders need to develop a comprehensive business case / cost case listing down all tangible & intangible costs including long term costs (need to quantify those intangible costs into a financial values) for apple to apple comparison.  Some schools / institutions also want to consider notebook besides tablets due to additional notebook's capabilities etc.

Hi, Thank you for your response and the site links. As I see that you are with Hewlett-Packard, I would like to address something with you. I read in one of the links that due to the way the lighting was on the tablets, the brain was not able to memorize the text itself as well  as in reading a bound text. It also brought up about the fact that night reading is a complicated task (once again, due to the lighting). Based on that read; I was just wondering if there would ever be a way to put a 'night mode' on the ipad/tablet that would imitate/simulate/generate the soft glow and ambience that lamps that use regular bulbs produces? In addition; is it possible that different colored background screens would enhance reader capability as opposed to just a white background?

Yes, you can put into a "night mode" for various iPad / tablets (see link below) that can reduce the claim on eye strain pain, sleep disruption, possible causes of Epilepsy among young children who use iPad / tablets too much etc.
