I've just read through a paper* that had 16 participants (from 2 distinct groups of adults and teens). They were interviewed on their perceptions of an experience. The paper does not explicitly describe the method of analysis, but does mention 'themes' several times. My first guess was thematic analysis had been used. I was therefore prompted to contact the researcher who confirmed the transcripts had been manually analysed using content analysis. I thought CA was more appropriate when the researcher was trying to quantify the data in some way. (There are no tables or other statistics included, other than 3 sentences like '5 of the participants expressed X') I also understood CA was a form of quantitative analysis embedded in a realist, positivism paradigm but there's nothing else in the paper to suggest this was the researcher's stance.
Is there a way to resolve this puzzle?
