I'm working on a Mobile MIMO antenna for the sub-6GHz band. I noted that all previous works in literature used a complete ground plane. is there any standard they followed? Why there is no design implemented on partial ground?

Ground plane in general must be one piece - larger the better. Whole point of it is to be a reference surface with uniform potential.

I agree with you. but there are a lot of articles proposing a partial ground plane for the MIMO antenna! Are there any reasons that prevent us from applying this type of ground on smartphone applications ?
Greetings, the application speaks about the requirement for antenna design.
1. conventionally, antennas for mobile phones are omnidirectional. To abide the same researchers go with defected ground pattern.
2. In case ii, whenever antennas were to be used in proximity with users, then it is mandate that human is not impacted due to unnecessary radiations emanating from antenna (one such application is antenna designed for body area network). In such case it is mandate that the SAR compliancy for the designed antenna is verified. So to evade from unnecessary impact due to back lobe radiations the antenna is backed with full metal backing.
