The problem in brief...
A friend told me...
"I sent a research paper to a respectful journal a Q1 Scopus indexed and received a rejection the second day without reviewing. (My name was affiliated with unknown university).
After a while, I have re-sent a similar work to the same journal, however the paper was a part of my work of my thesis which has an affiliation to a popular university. so it got accepted".
So, why some journal editors assess your research based on your educational institution? don't you think that young and unknown universities should be given a chance?
For me, this bias makes the gap between the popular and other universities getting bigger.
Mohammed - you could be making an incorrect speculation here. I don't personally know of institution alone being a deciding factor. The editor/general review process is often subjective and inconsistent. That's just a general fact. You suspect that it might be institution-based - but it could be less suspect than that. It might be a different handling editor/editors that assessed them both. At the end of the day, good quality research should prevail regardless of institution. It doesn't happen 100% of the time but, hopefully, it mostly does.

Thank you Mr. Whitehead for the explanation. I was hoping as you said and I agree with you that in general the review process is based on the quality of the work. However, that incident happened with me too but in a slightly different way.

I don't think the assessment of a paper's quality depends solely on the reputation of the author's educational institution and I do not personally hope so. Recently, I have noticed during the submission process of my revised article a mention written in red "Unknown University" and I am not sure whether it will be taken into account when evaluating the quality of the paper, if the answer is yes, it would certainly be unfair because the competence of an author and the quality of his/her paper are not necessarily related to the reputation of his/her academic affiliation.
Apart from the institutional fact which has been negated to some extent, I believe the post-editorial reviews are blind and that makes a lot more sense

I don't think that this is the only reason for rejecting your paper.
The editor has many factors to be taken into consideration.
