there are ample societies like MRSI, AAAS, RSC,ASME,SCIE etc etc.. why should I join these societies paying a large sum of money. I paid some money during my PhD and I couldn't find any benefits. I see lot of people put them on CV and lot of universities ask about them?
What are the practical benefits one get apart from contacts and discounts at conference?
It all depends on what your goal is. At the three research I universities I worked at, failure to join professional organizations and failure to present annually at professional conferences and failure to present papers annually would simply lead to you being replace after 5 years. Replaced with someone who understood that the modest cost of joining professional organizations must be considered as an investment on your career. As I told my former doc students, there are colleges where no one published much but no sane person would want to work in those colleges. So, if you think you are insane and would like working at jobs most people would avoid then you should avoid joining professional organizations, avoid present papers at professional conferences, and avoid publishing papers in professional journals.
I recommend participation in professional organizations that focus on both research and application (that's research AND teaching for me). The fees are not outrageous for all of them.

Societies are kind of enclosure which makes research ideas and innovation powerful and effective to change the world.
Provide training to young engineers and scientists by conducting workshops and certified online courses.
Recognition and awards for young scientists, innovators and outstanding scientists in the particular field.
Provide a forum for presenting our work (magazines, conferences and journals). SPIE, ASME, SMST etc. used to conduct yearly conferences and have their credible international journals.
Many societies have taken the responsibility and contributed in documenting and taking the technology through eras.
Societies are a great way to get advice, access dedicated support and training, or to meet and learn from role models in your field. Many place a particular focus on developing graduate students or early-career researchers. You will also build confidence through finding and sharing with other people like yourself.
