E.g. in surface enhanced infrared spectroscopy it is quite often claimed that absorbance or extinction defined as A = -lg T (where T is the transmittance) is proportional to the electric Field intensity E2. I have never found an explanation or a derivation of this claim. I think that the fact that the transition probability is proportional to E2 is not sufficient to establish a proportionallity between A and E2. Can someone point me to a derivation?
