I read in a paper that the reason for enhanced surface properties of alumina after barium and lanthanum addition was that they didn't interact with the support by formation of oxide layer over the support material. Is there any criteria that helps us to predict this behavior in metals ? My main question is whether barium or lanthanum or any metal which will behave in this way ,do they have special properties that enables them to behave in such a way and whether the addition of any metal(assuming size of the metal is more so as it shouldn't go into pores of alumina)will result in this behavior ?
