Nanofibrous Proton conductive membranes show much higher proton conductivity than casted membranes of a same material.
Moreover, increasing ambient temperature and humidity also increses the proton conductivity. The question is why nanostructure increases the performance of the membrane and what happens in molecular or quantum scale. Thank you.
When it is at nanoscale, the surface to volume ratio is high. Meaning more atoms at the surface to interact, thus if given energy, the atoms are already at an excited state., therefore created more conduction.
The diameter of the fibrous material may not be the only reason for the improvement. In fibrous materials a lot is related with the porosity and electrolyte uptake.
