I used chlorosulfonic acid to enhance the acidity of SnO2 catalyst. After treatment, the catalyst was denoted as sulfonated SnO2. During the treatment, 2g of SnO2 was added with 2ml of chlorosulfonic acid drop by drop. After that, methanol was added to the mixture of SnO2 and Chlorosulfonic acid. What is the function of methanol?

I agree with the opinion of Prof. Frank T. Edelmann . Also, I recommend the use of ethanol instead of methanol since the inferior one is a weaker acid than the other.

Dear Nabihah Nur Fauzi, I assume that the function of the added methanol is to deactivate the unreacted excess of chlorosulfonic acid. You should carry out all work with chlorosulfonic acid in a well-ventilated fume hood!

Dear all, chlorosulfonic acid reacts violently with water, the reason why alcohols are used instead being less electrophilic. Also may be the reaction your catalyst is designed for need the total absence of water. How about the stability of this catalyst against water. My Regards
