What are the skills of scientific research?

First, find a problem you’re interested in exploring. Then, develop a hypothesis, and begin collecting data to prove or refute your hypothesis.

Next, analyze the data you’ve gathered, and then draw a conclusion based on trends you notice. If you carry out these skills, your research will be a success.

Just about soft skills are important for any person in any profession including scientist.

However, if you are wondering where to start focusing first the following should give you a good head start:

(1) Presentation skills. After all the hard work to invent or discover, as a scientist, you must know how to present your work or else all that hard work is wasted.

(2) Time management. There is always millions of tasks to do and keep track of. You must use a solid time management system with good organisational skills (in both physical and digital world).

(3) Goal setting. As a scientist you can easily get carried away by your passion for the field. You must stay focused and you can only do that by having specific goals.

(4) Report writing. Writing reports and papers is an important part of a scientist’s career.

(5) Personal Impact. At the end of the day, you need to impress people.

Personal Branding. A good scientist is recognised by his name. Your name is your brand. You brand is a community. You need to attend to it and make it grow.

(6) Learning to learn. As a scientist, you are a net learner; i.e. on balance you are more likely to learn more than you would teach others in your entire career. If you end up teaching a lot more than learning, it is unlikely that you would become a good scientist. Hence, learning how to learn the quickest is to your advantage, than to say, learning how to teach.

(7) Memory skills. Simple mind tricks that help you memorise facts quickly can have profound effects on your research and also on your presentation of it to others.

(8) Overcoming procrastination. Every once in a while, as a scientist, you may get stuck. Knowing how to get out is crucial.

(9) Decision making. A scientist is confronted with hundreds of decisions on a daily basis. Know how to make them on your own and with others.

(10) Persuasion skills. A persuasive scientist can change the world. A great scientist that cannot convince an audience becomes only a reference, hidden deep at the end of a paper.

(11) Communication skills. Knowing how to work in a team is essential for a scientist that interacts with a variety of people such as lab technicians, students, colleagues, budgets controlling faculty deans and others. Communication skills along with other interpersonal skills such as conflict management, handling difficult people, emotional intelligence are important skills.

(12) Business networking. Knowing how to network with other scientists and the industry is critical in bringing ideas out of the academic world and into the commercial world and turn them into useful products and services.
