Neutrons are used in fission since they are capable of inducing the nuclear reaction that breaks the nucleus (for instance, when a nucleus of uranium 235 absorbs a neutron, it becomes uranium 236, quite unstable, which breaks down in two fission products, Kr92 and Ba141, plus 3 free neutrons).
