However, if you find the index to compare the portfolio performance, you should choose the index that suit with your portfolio characteristics

The market portfolio theoretically contains every asset in the economy - stocks, bonds, real estate, etc. The FTSE 100 is not representative of the market portfolio, since it only includes 100 large stocks.
