In standard rectangular Waveguide in the operating mode width is approximating equal to three fourth (3/4) of the free space wavelength. In order to keep the cutoff freq of other competing high order modes high usually the height is kept at half of the width. This will improve the bandwidth of the dominent mode.

The answer is quite reasonable, but it depends on the application, for example the square waveguides are used for polarizer applications.
