Since 2016 coup attempt CHP has accepted the official narrative of AKP government and its discourse (of rhetoric). I am investigating the reasons of this compliance.
It has not, at first. There was very militant political discourse in Turkey during AKP's first years. CHP clearly advocated this militant rhetoric (Under Deniz Baykal's leadership especially). And between around 2002-2008 AKP had more liberal (according to Turkey's political condition) rhetoric. When this contrast between the CHP and AKP combined with the positive developments in the macro economy, the AKP achieved great election successes. It must be admitted that the AKP cleansed the language of political discourse from the militant elements of the Republic (which this militant discourse is a legacy of the military's frequent intervention in politics and the one-party era). It is true that AKP's overwhelming election victories condemned the CHP to AKP's rhetoric for a while. Especially during Kılıçdaroğlu's early leadership, this can be seen very clearly. However, the polarizing language that has risen in the AKP's discourse since the Gezi Park events, the deterioration of the economy and the unification of the opposition under one roof have ended this situation.
