In my work, I am using MMT nanocaly and L12 epoxy resin. I got result that, adding nanocaly till 2 wt% , both tensile and flexural strength increased as compared to neat epoxy.. But at 4 wt% of nanocaly, the tensile strength slightly got increased but flexural strength got decreased as compare 2 wt% of nanocaly.
How can i conclude result and what might be reason for above result.
hello, i think you should check your composite curing content at 3 stages 1th: before adding nano clay, 2th: after adding nano clay under 3%, and 3th: after adding nano clay more 3% by DSC or any device or method.
i think your epoxy curing content before adding nano clay is not complete and when you add nano clay into your composition duo to hydroxyl groups onto nano clay, curing content increase and both tensile strength and flextural strength increase but at high amount of nano clay, curing content is reached maximum and adding more nano clay just result in more rigid composite.

According to my previous published work, in macromolecular materials and engineering, adding MMT or OMMT up to certain content can increase the tensile strength of polymer, however, adding more of the additive causes a decrease in this property. In addition, sometimes adding the additive increases elongation, as it was seen in our work.
It should be noted that theses behavior could have different reason.
However, The main difference of the two properties you are comparing is caused by the MMT layers or stacks morphology in the matrix.
Suppose that the clay layer is situated in along with your dumbbell axis, it could increase tensile strength by slipping layers in each other which was completely explained in the manuscript with other proposed mechanism. However, flexural strength was decreased due to more layers of clay, 4%, which are more parallel and situated perpendicular to force inserted.

This may cause by several factors. What type of MMT nanoclay you used, epoxy system, how you dispersed the MMT nanoclay into the epoxy system, curing ratio, curing conditions, level of dispersion of MMT nanoclay before and after curing, especially after curing. Some defects of the sample or long molecule of the intercalant may also affect your epoxy properties. If you can understand the factors, the picture of question will be clear to answer.

It is wrong result, irrespective of contents nano. But for the subnative analysis it is necessary to see data
It is a well known result: when adding 1-2% of polar organic substance to epoxy resin the tensile strength increases because the additive fills the pores of free volume of the cured epoxy resin. At the same time - the flexural strength may decrease because the liquid additive acts as plasticiser
This due to the depends on the dispersion technique of the MMT and epoxy composite system. According your results the dispersion is not proper. Please you try again and using different dispersion techniques such as prove ultrasonication and mechanical stirring for better dispersion.
I can say the addition of nanoclay MMT by low concentration accepted in thermoset Epoxy resin up to 2 wt % , but by further addition i.e at 4 wt % the agglomeration of nanoclay my be occurred, that lead to deterioration in mechanical properties.
Since, flexural properties are highly matrix dependent ones, the agglomeration or poor dispersion arised while adding more amount of nanoclay may result in the reduction of flexural properties. So, you can check the results again by adding further amount of nanoclay to the system.
