Of course, I need to complete a research project to get a degree. But besides that: I think a lot is wrong in society and in order to be able to change things we must know what, why and how things are as they are. To me, this is the most important reason to do critical social research. So, I think "serving humanity" is the option that fits best.
Research creates evidence , that later becomes foundation for any field.
In social sciences, research usually generates more questions than answers, which keeps us going, I guess. We tend to dig deeper and deeper and end up with more questions that lead to other research from a different angle.....and so on.
In the MH field there is a relatively new concept in treatment called the Recovery Movement. This is so misunderstood by the antiquated philosophy of medical model treatment that merely telling therapists and psychiatrists about it and its efficacy was not enough. So research on methods and results of the tenets of this model needed to be researched and I was lucky enough to find fellow professionals who were experienced and willing to investigate the recovery Model.
Yes, to earn a qualification. But still researchers who are dedicated to their work have some more targets beyond this. In my case, I would always address an issue in the society so that the results of the research would give a recommendation to find solutions. We researchers have lots of responsibility in identifying issues and solutions for them for the betterment of the future according to my opinion.

James Gillen - I am working from the other side of the recovery model- not as a policy by the government but as something accomplished by people even in the absence of external facilitation from the policy environment.
To respond to the original question, I do research to establish the recovery happens even in the absence of government policy. And I enjoy research as a quest for bringing those ideas to the fore that are either marginalized or unknown, because the world around is not yet exploring those options. So my research is not confined to a PhD degree but spans three different areas, only in one of which I work for the degree. The rest are my passions equally so- in applied musicology and counseling

I believe that science if used properly could make our lives better, i try to be part of those who work for the flourishing of humanity.
As all my professional career has been linked to the university, to promote I had to join the research field to be able to complete my doctorate and, subsequently, improve my academic position. Apart from this, I have always felt very motivated by research in order to establish results that may be useful for modeling natural phenomena or the functioning of the human body, for example.
For me, the purpose of doing research has always and only been, in words of the great Prof. Richard Feynman , " The pleasure of finding things out ".

Research helps social engineering. Particularly research related to social sciences address prevailing issues and reveals the causes and effects while giving recommendations. This is all about knowledge generating and information gap filling according to my understanding.
