Maths is the basic tool that enables us to scale 'little' experience to other conditions very precisely. Moreover when operating in the complex domain one is able to achieve results which the human brain in the real world could not deliver. Exciting tool !!!

Maths can reach very 'high' levels of abstract thought that exclude most people . The main complaint from my students is "When will I ever need to use this in my life ?" , to which the truthful answer is "Probably never !",
On an everyday and practical level , however , arithmetic and geometry (and , perhaps , even some basic algebra) give us very useful tools . On a practical level it helps to have the basic principles of these firmly grounded so as to help us plan , predict and control situations and processes both in work and in our personal lives .
On an intellectual level study of 'maths' gives us:
a firm grounding in logic ,
the tools to interpolate , extrapolate with accuracy ,
critical methods for analysis , and synthesis ,
a basis for rigorous modelling and reasoning .
It does not follow that without the study of maths that people would not gain these skills , but for school students it does formalise and test these processes more frequently than other academic subjects .
It is a great disservice to the subject that it is commonly taught as a series of recipes to be remembered and spewed out in the narrow confines of 'tests' . Maths pervades our lives and our environment , and should be taught as a channel of awareness and used consciously as the tool it is .
