In a normal Hummer method, we prepare GO either by the the oxidation of grahhite flakes by NaNO3, KMO4, H2SO4 (coditions intentionally omitted) or by oxidation graphite flakes with KMO4, H2SO4, H2O2, HCl (again conditions not mentioned here). The former method is accompanied by the poisonousc / toxic gases like NO2/N2O4 while the latter evolves highly toxic ClO2 gas (affects skin).
In the improved Hummer method, the graphite flakes are oxidized by KMO4 and a mixture of H2SO4& H3PO4 which produces no toxic gases (NO2, N2O4 or ClO2).
In addition, the better quality GO product (size etc.) and time duration of oxidation and conrolled reaction conditions (see literature) favor KMO4, H2SO4-H3P4 oxidation
