The content of minerals is based on XRD.
Samples are lacustrine shales.
Mineralogy of these samples (average content): calcite (59%), clays (16%), quartz (16%), dolomite (5%) and trace amount of pyrite and siderite; mixed-layer illite-smectite (~60%), illite (~28%), kaolinite (~7%) and chlorite.

It is easy to correlate with the diagenetic transformation of smectite. However, if so, there should be negative correlation between clays and quartz, due to the increase of quartz. Indeed, the illite content correlates positively with the quartz (general trend, although not very convergent).
