closed-press training gives more time on focusing and concentration, in 2006 one of the main reasons that Brazil lost the world cup was the preparations in public and with open-press.
Does it come down to confidence in your ability as an individual (coach or player?) to work in a situation under scrutiny. Could you look into the psychology of a coach/manager...........many 'seem' (I say that with no research indicators) to have a paranoia on people seeing their strategies and tactics. To be honest, looking into the Elite sports environment, the one trait that all top coaches appear to have is supreme self confidence. If this is transferred into the players then they have no fear of what they do on the occasion of their competitive performance because it relies on many variables on that particular event - weather, psychological condition of players, tactical development of the team (reactors) etc etc. Again, no real research that I can take those thoughts from, but interesting to look at some countries who are happy to have open sessions as a regular aspect, but others who have mass paranoia
Generally, most of coaches conduct the first part of training in open method, this stage is for physical work..but once it comes o tactics, they close it as it is confidential, every coach has to surprise his opponent by hiding some secrets before the game.
Hi Jamal, what you are saying is correct, many times I have worked in open training sessions and then you keep your secrets 'tucked away' in closed sessions. My belief is that the top players/coaches, are not really worried and they get on with their game, undertaken through a huge degree of self belief and supreme confidence in their ability.
