it is said that it is compulsory in western countries for a professor to work in industry for some time . is it so . whats the main reason ?? to get a practical knowledge of the real life scenario.what a professor is teaching he/she must have a real life experience
It is not compulsory. This depends on the discipline. For example, faculty in Business Schools usually have experience working for a company that is related to their experience. A similar statement can be made about Engineers and those is various Computer fields.
You cannot be forced to have 2 full-time jobs!!!!! But as Rochel said, academics from some disciplines can be involved with the industry in co-funded projects; others can start SMEs from their phd or postdoc work. Moreover some professionals such as accountants, teachers, lawyers etc, can make the transition to teaching in Higher Education.
As Rochel said above, it is not mandatory, but it is frequently beneficial... to both parties.
Especially in engineering disciplines in Germany it is very common that a professor must have professional experiences in the industry. The main reason is to understand how the industry works and to consider it in research, education and technology transfer.
