Some resins/gels are able to swell in aprotic solvents and follow polarity (maximum swelling in high polarity solvents such as DMSO and lowest in hexane) for the same. However, they are not able to swell in polar protic solvents.

Literature survey on this topic revealed that thermodynamics is playing a major role behind this phenomenon. However, the exact thermodynamic mechanism is not clear. It would be helpful if someone can throw some light on it.

Thanks in advance!
