Why do organisms engage in cannibalistic behavior?

I have read an article ( Hernández-Urcera et al. 2014) about octopuses engaging in conspecific predation and it showed some possible reasons why they have cannibalistic behavior. However, can these same reasons be applied to other animals such as chimpanzees? Also, are there any documented disadvantageous effects to those who engage in cannibalism?
