I had noticed that many universities are showing intrests in previous or 1st degree CGPA while hiring a masters or PhD candidate. But they dont show interest to interview the students with low CGPA but with high potential to handle a research. There are so many talented students who are looking for a M.Sc or PhD full scholarships with an excellent grade for their final year research thesis but with a decent CGPA. Also those students have the potential to face the postgraduate studies. Though they are not offered a scholarship which is hard to accept. If they are given a right opportunity definitely they will prove them selves to this world. In my opinion CGPA is decided by the lecturers itself. So why dont universities interview students with high potential while offering a placement?
Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is a representative of a student's overall academic performance in all classes offered. For instance, A "B" average in a class is indicative of adequate understanding of basic theories in the topic and forms the foundational background needed for further postgraduate programmes in such field of interest. As you rightly observed, most universities assess prospective postgraduate students using CGPA attained in the previous academic programmes (Bachelor's or Master's degree) majorly to evaluate the prospects of such students to complete the intended academic or research-based programmes. Though, very few schools do organize entrance examination and/or oral interview to determine the most suitable candidates for scholarship awards or graduate research assistantship. Thanks.
@seyi festus olatoyinbo I agree with you. But Im wondering why most people are not aware that CGPA is influenced by the lecturers and the universities which offers the degree. In some cases race,religion,minority everything matters to obtain a very good cgpa
Dear Lizny Jaufer, Since Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is an indicator of a student's overall academic performance, most of the universities in the world show interest in high CGPA while hiring a masters' or PhD candidate. You are right that sometimes the students not having high CGPA may have high potential to do research. But the universities don't offer them scholarships for their postgraduate studies. Even in many universities of Bangladesh, students who are very interested to do a Research (thesis) at their Master's level and are really talented in research, are not allowed to take the course because of their low CGPA in the previous exams. CGPA is the only criterion to select the students in the Master's thesis group.
Actually, interests and capacities to do research should be considered and these research-talented students should also be awarded scholarships while hiring a master's or PhD candidate.
