Many publishers ask us to cite their papers in a special way. Otherwise, if we want to publish in a different journal or for a conference, we usually have to follow their rather different citation rules. Why do these publishers waste our precious space for such demands?
Carlos, it's not about the author guidelines of publisher P, which are necessary (but should be standardized throughout the different fields of study - that's another question already asked here on RG). Which file type to upload, which citation standard to follow - all of this fine.

I agree with Farhad as far as author names are concerned. I tend to think that it is mostly conference papers that propose to the readers how they should cite their papers.
Farhad and Mohamed, I appreciate your views. Most journals demand certain citation styles, so that the "how to cite"s are inappropriate without careful editing, though. This is error prone as all of us know who have to send a paper to another journal/conference than originally intended.
Sometimes, the author names are misspelled and confusing as you can see in the attachment (the original authors are not to blame!). "Ivnd" should be "Ivan" followed by a semicolon, if this means anything nowadays. If we copied this, we'd be caught by research quality people for improper citations. And they'd be right!
Dear Michael, ether is no a final and reasonable answer (= reason). Styles vary and seem to multiply.
As an author, you are to follow the indications. F.i., uploading the paper as pdf or Latex; APA norms, or Chicago, and so forth…
You know: at the end of the day, it is just a technical affair, probably.

Dear Michael,
I believe that the lack of standardized formats of citing books, articles, etc. is a consequence of passivity of the scientific community and aggressive commercial competition of publishers.
Different Citation and Style Guides exist dear followers! In spite of this fact we have been asked to cite papers in a special way! I do think that some sort of agreement of the publishers must be a goal to be achieved in order to adopt standards for!
