I think the greater difference is regarding steroid hormones. The sexual hormones are immunomodulators, and this is clear in menopausal women: the menopausal period is related to an increased number of peripheral leukocytes with abnormal chromosomes and also is the period when cervix cancer, caused by HPV, starts to be epidemiologically significant. That is, I hypothesize that warts in children remain until adolescence, when the steroidal hormones appear. But when and adult gets warts, the sexual hormones are already present, so, HPV will become a long-term infection.
