I experienced this recently in my doctoral program when we (cohort) began publishing our dissertations in ProQuest. There are so many answers to this prompt, but I think many of my classmates believe that what they've written is new and earth-shattering when it's simply a reinterpretation of what's already known.
Polarization seems to fit primarily in regard to this along the principle of ethics to value of data ratio. Bias in Epidemiological stratification to the value of data to subject, stratifies the evaluation to pacify the wanted outcome, though Polarization warns to be ideological in perspective in data resource and evaluation.
There are so many answers to this prompt, For example, intellectual property protection, sharing awareness, cognitive limitations, etc.
In academic institutions, the "Sword of Damocles" dangles with the threat of "publish or perish". Until information is copyrighted, it is open for others to claim as their own (unethical and unprofessional). Most want to ensure that they are credited for the information.
