I am curious to know what is the reason mostly Cu2O is preferred in H2 generation and proton reduction rather than CuO? What is the fundamental reason and difference, if any?
The difference in the band gaps of the materials is the main reason of using Cu2O for water splitting. The band gap of Cu2O is 2.17 eV while the other, CuO, shows the band gap at 1.2 eV. And for visible light water splitting, Cu2O is an obvious choice over CuO.
