I have prepared CdTe/CdS Core shell quantum dots capped with MSA by refluxing method. A little excess of methanol was added to the aqueous solution and particles were precipitated and XRD data was taken. But when I am trying to redissolve this powder in water it is not dissolving. What may be the problem? Should I use any other solvent for dissolving the QDs? How can a solution of this powder be prepared?
There could be more than one reason:
CdSe (and CdTe) should not be highly soluble in water. In fact CdSe powders and films are deposited inside aqueous solutions.
In case of small particles, the particles tend to go to the top (flotation). This is a common surface phenomenon, even if the power is from a metal with high density such as Fe. This is due to surface tension phenomenon.
I think you can dissolve Qds in phosphat buffer saline pH 7 or 7.4
