I am preparing pva/ chitosan nanocomposites pva/starch nanocomposites .So many paper i have seen both crooslinking agent like glutarldhyde , glyoxal and plactizers like gly cerol is used? both have some function what is that?actually both is needed? plz tell me how both work? what is the actual fuction?absence of crosslinking agent or plactizers what will happen to the composite films...plz tell me the answer anybody
Both of them are similar crosslinking agents, and the difference is in their molecular chain. If you need a more compact crosslinked structure you use glyoxal, otherwise can use more longer molecule glutaraldehyde. So, it depends what swelling or crosslinked degree do you want to get at the end. You have more option to choose by changing molar ratio of these crosslinking reagents when you use them together.
Dear all, the usual problem encountered in preparing polymer blends is the phase separation of the polymers components forming the blend. Solutions to this problems are crosslinking and the use of compatibilizers so that both phases are kept together. Plasticizers help in better interpenerating both polymers in each other by reducing the internal viscosity. Without these additives, phase separation occurs or at extreem situation a poor mixing leads to poor interfaces rendering the blend with any resistance to stresses. Best Regards
Crosslinking agents anchor the polymeric chain molecules. They stiffen the chain May not have functionality to themselves and May be added across the double bonds in the polymeric chains as interchain agents agents like sulfur added to rubber during vulcanization. Plasticizers May have functionality to itself like glycerol as you mentioned is trifunctional molecule may impart more plasticity and rigity by using its own functionality to link with polymeric chains to reinforce them.
