We live in a time, where Social Media are quick to judge or 'troll' us
Also, a sharp move to the political Right and increased surveillance and oppression has occurred, on a global scale.People are scared of their governments, spying corporations and even future employers may access your comments
Does this suppress debate and is this unhealthy for our Society?
Do you feel intimidated from participating in debate, even though you may learn and grow from the interaction?
Where do you stand?
Because it may lead to a misunderstanding of some and it develops into hatred between the interlocutors
I am not really sure if people generally are scarred to debate controversial issues. In the social environment most are not really scared....

In my experience of living in a military dictatorship the fear leans more towards being locked away on trumped charges for exercising something that is different from the opposition or losing a life without being being given any civilian security. Those that do get a chance to express their viewpoints through social media are located in a very far away place. As long as there is injustice and a moral breakdown of trust in the government then people have a right to say something before the corruption deems the situation a normal thing that's part of the "culture".
If people have mutual respect and sincerely try and understand the other side, there can be discussion. And in the end, we may have to agree to disagree.
The problem arises people accuse the other of being a racist, a nationalist, a supremacist, or whatever, and this simply stops the discussion.
A vegetarian may believe that killing animals is immoral; it is simply wrong. A non-vegetarian may disagree. How do we bridge this gap? It is not easy but perhaps through discussion and compromise there is a solution.
One person believes it is okay to burn the Bible in public; the other person does not. How to bridge this gap? I don’t know but we must try.
