Basically, Prof Peter Kershaw , as Dr Wolfgang R. Dick and I have found, the algorithms are just different and there is little, it seems, that anybody can do about it.

Besides the reason indicated above, I think there are at least two other reasons:

-Make sure that all your papers are present here on RG. Unfortunately, this is not always happening automatically…

If this all is ‘fixed’ than you can expect that the number of citations here on RG will be something in the range of 80-85% of that of the number of citations found by Google Scholar, based on a little investigation I did while looking at my own citations:

For me, citation here only 1/6 of the citation on Google Scholar!

There could be several reasons the citation count on ResearchGate is lower than that on Google Scholar.

First, ResearchGate relies on its user base to manually add publications and update citation counts, whereas Google Scholar automatically crawls the web to find and index scholarly publications and citations. Therefore, it is possible that some publications have not been added to ResearchGate or citation counts have not been updated for all publications.

Second, ResearchGate filters out duplicate or inaccurate citations, which can cause a lower citation count compared to Google Scholar. Google Scholar may count citations from non-scholarly sources such as blogs, social media, and news articles, which would inflate the citation count.

Finally, citation counts can vary among different citation databases because of differences in data collection, indexing methods, and citation metrics used. Some citation databases may also have a lag in updating citation counts, which may cause discrepancies among different databases.

I think basically, ResearchGate only record articles uploaded to their system.
