All metals are toxic above a threshold concentration. Metals can cause intracellular damage under three principal mechanisms, (a) by interacting with thiol, histidyl and carboxyl groups present in peptides, (b) by stimulating the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and (c) in the case of non-essential metals, by displacing essential metals as cofactors and therefore interfering with protein function
