It is extremely unfortunate that still paediatric orthopaedic facilities are under developed at least in my country.
I beleive the general paediatric surgeon may not be less literate but still the foresightedness with which paediatric orthopaedic surgeon can manage the case is the best of service which can be provided to such sick patients with long term sequele.
Once the diagnosis is confirmed, the patient should be referred to an orthopaedic surgeon. The reason is that the treatment involves surgical intervention (arthrotomy and washout) . In addition, poorly managed Septic arthritis can lead to unfortunate complications.
In the case of septic arthritis in pediatric patients, the primary physician typically involved in initial management is a pediatrician, especially one with expertise in infectious diseases. However, consultation with a pediatric orthopedic surgeon is often required due to the orthopedic nature of the problem.
I would say it is a joint effort, children are usually admitted in Paediatric Ward, but we advise them regularly and perform any operation needed, however minor that is.
