It is known that Roger Tomlinson introduced the term 'GIS' in 1968, but who introduced the term 'Historical GIS' (aka 'HGIS') and how it evolved before I. Gregory & V. Gilham (1998)?
I think that the best authority in this matter will be prof. B. Szady.

He works at the Historical Geoinformation Laboratory.

Actually Bogumil Szady was invited to answer here ;-)
I've done some research and I think it might be like that:
1961-1969 - invention and introduction of GIS (R. Tomlinson)
1988-1992 - first attepmts on "Temporal GIS" (G. Langran, D. Pequet, R. Vrana)
1997-1998 - "Historical GIS" (C. Benett, I. Gregory, V. Gilham, H. Southall)
1999 - Historical GIS as a subtype of Temporal GIS, object-oriented GIS (M. Wachowicz)
2001 - "Time-interactive GIS" (F. Ott, T. Swiaczny)
2002 - 2003 - "Historical GIS" (I. Gregory, A. Knowles)
2010 - "Deep mapping" (re-introduced in new meaning, D. Bodenhamer)
Is anything missing?
