I wonder if anyone knows who did the the first Mössbauer in situ test in electrochemistry (batteries, fuel cell etc)?
The oldest paper I could find is "Galvanic cells containing cathodes of iron-doped beta-alumina in JOURNAL OF THE ELECTROCHEMICAL SOCIETY 121(1) · 1974 p1-7 · DOI: 10.1149/1.2396820 by John H. Kennedy and Anthony F. Sammells"

Well I was looking at lot at it during my PhD and I found this paper
Y. Geronov, T. Tomov, S. Georgiev, Mossbauer spectroscopy investigation of the iron
electrode during cycling in alkaline solution, J. Appl. Electrochem. 5 (4) (1975) 351–358.
it is in alkaline solution but this is still electrochemistry ;)

Claire, Yes you are right, but still it was one year after Kennedy's work !
Artur, yes it is in situ Mössbauer but not Li-ion batteries as recalled y Claire. I miss something concerning ref 17! since in kennedy's paper there are only 7 refs :-)

I think it is reference 17 of the paper i mentioned :), After it is a difficult question because what is called in situ....
As I guess Attila Vértes has measured iron corrosion by MS well before 1970. See his reference list
It is possible Vértes has done a lot with Mössbauer spectroscopy (more than 400 papers) ! I think the only problem is that the term "in situ" was not used at before 70's.
Scherson wrote a review of Mossbauer in J Electroanal Chem 150 (1982) 535, in which he states that the first in-situ Mossbauer was
B.J. Bowles and T.E. Cranshaw, Phys. Lett., 17 (1965) 258.

We can learn also that after Bowles and Cranshaw (1965), O'Grady and Bockris have made a cell for in situ study of iron passivation in 1973 before Kennedy.
O'Grady and Bockris also used the term "in-situ" in thier paper : -)
