Whiteness was constructed as a privileged status on the basis of conquest and enslavement rather than indigeneity per se. Indeed, in portions of the Spanish empire, some people with native ancestries did rise to high status positions, though they were rare. But what really challenges your proposition recently is the practice of assuming indigenous identities to enhance status. Circe Sturm in Becoming Indian first pointed out how white privilege was being exercised by becoming Indian. Darryl Leroux has confirmed the practice in Distorted Descent. Case studies from Finland, Australia, and throughout the Western Hemisphere back this up.
