The physical characteristics of the activated carbon make it possible to determine these conditions of use. The size of the grains determines the adsorption rate (the smaller the grain, the faster the transfer to the center) and the pressure drop across the bed. For gas phase applications, activated carbon is available in the form of 2 to 3 mm diameter grains and threads or extruded, 3 to 5 mm long cylinders obtained from activated carbon first reduced to powder, then agglomerated with a binder and extruded to obtain the cylindrical shape. The density of the grain is 0,6 to 1 g.cm-3. Hardness is an important parameter which conditions its resistance to settling, attrition and vibration. It enables the formation of fines (dust) to be assessed, which are harmful to the operation of the installations (clogging of the bed, deposits in pipes and valves, etc.).
