Although autobiographical memory deficits appear to be one of the most persistent memory deficits in some patients after ECT, the tools to measure this in clinical practice are limited or nonexistent. The most frequently used tool in research, Columbia Autobiographical Memory Interview - short form (AMI-SF), is too extensive to be used in daily routine practice in psychiatric wards. We are looking for validated tools that could be implemented more easily. The aim is to use such a tool in a clinical ECT register, thus be used to measure hundreds of patients, at different stages of the treatment series. Any experiences or suggestions?

Dear Anthony! Thank you for your reply. Kopelman is indeed interesting. I will discuss this suggestion with our neuropsychologist. If necessary, I will come back to your generous offer. Did you find Kopelman's AMI feasible in clinical practice?
Kopelman was originally designed for amnesic patients but it could work in the ECT case although there have been no studies using it as yet.
The ECT (electroconvulsive therapy), widely and vehementally disputed, was simply placed in aging and community supports book (early 1990s) without even an acknowledgement of that dispute or multi-decade criticism. I may be the only one who even saw it who understands who has been lurking behind "support gates" in the disability fields, claiming that a practitioner or researcher need not respond to valid criticisms by others. I also dare not say but it is the wrong study to address the inquiry; the psychiatric centers have been "sued" under the 1999 Olmstead Decision of the Supreme Court, and they are operating illegally on laws of human rights protections including psychopharmaceutical interventions. Please contact your local and state psychiatric survivors' groups to begin.

At our service we systematically do a Montreal Cognitive Assessment screening. It is simple screening tool that can capture some of the cognitive side effects of ECT and is easy to administer. AMI is good for autobiografical memory.
