Which tool is suitable for joining low carbon steel with an another material less hard by friction stir welding, i mean design and chemical composition of tool?
Dear Abdellali, it depends on the second material you are meaning. I think, you think about aluminium (or magnesium). In the case of aluminium to steel joining, it will be also very important the joint type. When talking about overlapped joints, place the aluminium sheet as the upper plate. In this case, it will be enough to use AISI H13 tool steel. Because in such as case, mainly stirring in the aluminium sheet will occur. Only slight zone will be intermixed with the lower steel sheet. The same tool material (but not the same tool dimensions), you can you use when producing butt welds. But in this case, it is necessary to offset the tool towards softer material, i.e. aluminium. The choice number 1 is the tool price. Tool steel is not recommended as tool material for joining steels. Best regards
