thank you for the link which provides a very good overview of the Norwegian system. If I undersatnd it correctly there are Master's degree programmes for different subjects for 5 years as the initial teacher education for full teachers.

For those students who are starting initial teacher education in Norway, 5 years is the usual route, and it leads to a Master degree. If, however, a student has a bachelor in, for example,  Mathematics, English, Social Science etc, she can do a one-year (or two-year, if part time) top-up course that leads to a Postgraduate Certificate in Education.

Have a look at Finland, where teachers have a very high status in society. Norway is interested in Finish teacher education courses, and I think there will soon be some cross-cultural learning. In other words, the Norwegian courses might be changed to some extent in order to cherry pick good practice ideas from Finland.

In Oman and many countries in the middle east, there are two systems of pre-service teacher preparation. The first one involves four years (8 semesters) and leads to a Bachelors’ degree. It includes preparation in both subject content (e.g. geography, history, math..) and education (education philosophy, education psychology, classroom management, curriculum design,  practicum, etc.). The second one includes one year of education preparation/ post graduate diploma (24-30 credits)  for those who hold a bachelor’s degree in any subject area and wish to join the teaching profession.

In general, Masters’ degree is not a must, but many prospective teachers enroll in masters programs in a wide range of education majors, including curriculum & instruction, education psychology, special education, etc. Other teachers enroll in academic subjects (geography, chemistry, biology, ect.) The length of the program is almost two academic years (33-36 credits), with a thesis. 

In-service teacher preparation is provided for teachers in a wide range of topics to enhance their teaching skills. It includes workshops/seminars and graduate studies (Mostly Masters's degree)..
