Eisenia fetida is one of the best species for vermicomposting. Eisenia fetida is epigeic (Surface feeder earthworm) and feed approximately as much as its own body weight per day. It tolerate wide range of environmental stress like temperature, humidity etc. and this species are widely used in tropical countries.
The best types of worms for vermicomposting are red wigglers (Eisenia fetida) and redworms (Lumbricus rubellus). These two species make great worms for the compost bin because they prefer a compost environment to plain soil, and they are very easy to keep.
My experience is that earthworms are like dairy cows to a certain extent. Change their diet gradually or they will go off feed. They need to adapt to the intended food/diet. Generally, the worm species best adapted to a specific material/diet is the species found in the material to be processed. Avoid anaerobic materials, for example anaerobically digested manure, solid waste, or wastewater sludge.
