I am a researcher and I have to model a tunnel in 3D. I would like to know the better software to perform it. Whether it is Plaxis 3D or MIDAS GTS NX or any other suggestions please?
Thanks for your nice question, I suppose that really depends on the ground circumstances and tunneling methods, but I really prefer the #Flac3D which is a practical and developed software.
I think that the answer it depends of the objective. If you need to do a easy model and you need to learn the sofware fast, FLAC3D is not the best option. But if you know how to use FLAC3D, for me this is the best option, because you have more control to modificate all the parameters in the model.
It depends with the problem you want to resolve in a tunnel. FLAC 3D; ANYSIS softaware is ideal for continuum material , UDEC ; 3DEC is ideal for discontinuum material ; PFC 3D could be ideal for highly discrete material.
In your question, you should have clearly indicated as to whether you are currently a user of any relevant software or a new person to all of them. If, I suppose, you are new, you should consult your supervisor first who must have an idea and can theefore guide you and support you during the course of your work,
If you are not getting such help, I beleive you should find another supervisor.
Coming to the point, PLAXIS is easy to use, but, like any sotware, needs understanding of the theories involved in its material and geometrical modeling.
You may start with it first to feel that you have created a model for your problem and can at least have a feel of it.With time, persistence and more reading the initial uncomfort will turn into more clarity. Once you feel the limitations of PLAXIS, if any, in modeling your particular probleim, you will be in a position to ask specific queston about an alternative software and to, possibly, start using it after had gained the modeling experience and a facility of understanding of the theorm and the problem trial models through PLAXIS.
