The problem with your choice of oxides is that magnesium oxide and iron oxide react with water to form hydroxides. Only chromium (III) oxide is stable in water.

When hydroxides are heated, not hydrogen is split off, but water. This applies to most hydroxides, except for alkali metal hydroxides. Alkali metal hydroxides are thermodynamically very stable and melt without decomposing when heated.
