We would like to find a suitable solvent for lead iodide (PbI2) that can be nebulized easily for deposition by spray pyrolysis. PbI2 is soluble in DMF(N,N-dimethylformamide) but this is not good for spray pyrolysis. A suitable solvent for either PbI2 or PbCl2 would be appropriate for us.
Both mentioned compounds are soluble in dimetyl sulfoxide (DMSO) or DMSO-water mixture. Hot water can be used as a solvent for these compounds as well. However, I have no idea about nebulization properties of these solutions.
DMSO (i.e. dimethyl sulfoxide; dielectric constant: k=47.5) can dissolve both PbCl2 and PbI2. PbCl2 was reported to dissolve (slowly) in glycerol (k=41). Now, considering just nitrogen-containing organic solvents, it is known that formamide (k=84) can dissolve PbCl2. Dimethylformamide (DMF, k=38) can dissolve PbI2. Pyridine (k=12) can dissolve PbCl2 but does not dissolve PbI2 at room temperature to any appreciable extent. PbI2 is known to be soluble in (hot) aniline (k=7). As a rough general trend, it seems that lower dielectric constant tends to favour PbI2 solubility, while PbCl2 solubility tends to be favoured by higher values. Pyridine, however, clearly does not follow this trend.
Anyone ever use Butylamine for dissolving PbI2 or PbCl2?
