this is really a great study pertaining to animal nutrition at farmers level. but my doubt is, which will be better improvement of roughage quality by processing or improvement of rumen parameters. i feel combination of both may be even better?. and is it applicable at farmers level.
what are the possible economics?

Thank you for your reply. I feel the processing of low quality roughage has so much gap and a potential sector to work. If some econimic finding comes that may help farmers in a huge way. Till today silage prep and alkali treatment are the best processing techniques. What you feel sir a possible new approach

Could you be so kind as to let me know what ruminant are you talking about? Cattle? (dairy? beef?), Sheep? Goats?
What is your poor quality roughage?
What type of processing feeds is/are available to you at Farmer level? Physìcal or chemical treatments?
In rumen ecosystem, as in any system, information changes affects the whole.

In india dairy cattle and buffaloes are more. But as a nutritionist we can discuss about all ruminants. Our farmers level poor quality roughage means mostly straw. And processing techniques includes soaking in water and may be alkali treatment in some well organised farms.

ok, the two approach are 0k. you can try making chemical treatment to at least the 30% of the total straw -soaking straw in ashes + water solution - and improving rumen enviroment with multinutritional blocks and/or use of multipourpose tree foliages. best regards,
