Hello fellows, I'm about to begin my Master's thesis in 2 months. The thesis regards the modelling of dependencies in network-based Edge Clouds as well as the performance evaluation. I've done some research on which modelling language is the best one for my thesis.
Now I've got UML and SysML. My plan is to build a model with one of those languages and then transform the model into a Petri net model (or another quantitative model such as CTMC) in order to evaluate the performace, reliability, availability, and so on.
Could anyone tell me which of both language mentioned above or another modelling language I should use? I'd very much appreciate your help/ideas!
I'm not an expert on cloud computing (but my master thesis was about UML meta-models), but if you cannot find an easy alternative, your best chance will be defining your own meta-model extending UML or SysML diagrams. Another option for you is searching if there are UML profiles (meta-models) reported on publications. I have found several works using "cloud computing UML profile" in Google Scholar, but you must search for something close to your project (something easy to convert into Petri nets, or similar).
Take my answer as your last option, maybe a cloud computing expert can help you in the next few days with a profile or even a cloud-based modelling language.
To choose between UML and SysML, one question you could ask yourself is : "How broad is the range of systems I need to model?". SysML offers to design hardware, facilities, personnel aspects, which may or may not be relevant in your case.
Also, before thinking about transformation, ask yourself if a State Machine UML diagram isn't expressive enough for your needs.
The solution offered by Oscar is definitely the most adaptable and powerful : Designing your own meta-model (either through UML profiles or using ecore/MPS, etc) and then design the model transformation to produce a petri net and use model validation/verification methods.
However this solution requires some background in meta-modeling, transformation and validation.
SoaML and ModaCloudML are nice UML profiles targeting the cloud.
SysML is a more generic component based language.
