Now a days teaching is exclusively done through PowerPoint presentations. A lot of time is spent making ppt rather than reading for the lecture And thorough learning of subject is missed. is board teaching a better than ppt lecture?
you pose a very interesting question. And I agree with you. In my opinion, students and teachers are not so use to read a book as to use the new technologies.
I think that it´s good for the students not use only PPT presentations, but also read and doing works without technologies.
Pls my fellow researchers, power point is only better for the teacher or lecturer in term of teaching but when you write on the board the student will learn more or understand more. power point should be use more for presentation not to teach student.
I strongly feel that both power point and board teaching is good for example to explain the theory and basic concept then board teaching is better. If you teach on application then it is better to use power point kind of teaching. In power point kind teaching is easily make students understands the importance of the theory by showing more field photograph. Same thing the theory need to teach in class step by step and explain each word in a clear manner, so board is good for doing this in proper manner.
By and large, PPTs have made people lazy. Now let me explain.
On an average, a class will be of 40 to 50min. A good teacher actually teaches few concepts in one class, solving at most one or two problems and the remaining as an assignment to solve by the students. But this is really worth and the students understand better since they too will actually 'write down' notes. There will be less burden since much of it is understood and learnt in class itself.
If one uses PPTs, the teacher mostly will read and explain. There is no writing part. The depth can't be achieved. Temptation will be there to put more and more slides otherwise it feels 'so less' for a 40-50min class. This saturates the student. Too many things get crammed. It hampers understanding. They will be simply 'watching' and no 'understanding'. The students are bound to struggle after the class.
There is a growing tendency among the teachers to 'snipping' the text from pdf, 'copy-pasting' to PPT. Intention is to finish the syllabus. Nowadays teaching means only reading from PPTs. It's like teaching swimming in air.
Unless there is a real need to show any picture or video, use of PPTs must not be encouraged. Still, various factors are there like capability to teach, how much you know, communication skill, which institution, what kind of students etc.
It depends on the topic/lesson. If there is a need that students write their answers on the board, board teaching is a good one. Teaching thru powerpoint can save time for a teacher to write the words/important points on a board. Powerpoint can likewise attract the attention of students.
Common themes in favor for “writing on the board” included (1) more active engagement, (2) more appropriate pace, and (3) presentation of less extraneous material.
The PowerPoint offers more accessibility of the lecture notes if students are absent and less uncertainty of whether the notes they had were complete. Therefore is recommending that lectures should be developed as if they were going to be written on the board and then converted to PowerPoint.
The use of both simultaneously is better if some one taking the class of physics,Mathematics subjects and it varies from subject to subject and depends upon one's choice.
