According to IEA ( https://www.iea.org/publications/freepublications/publication/hydrogen.pdf ) there are four main groups of solid materials suitable for storage of hydrogen: 

- Carbon-based materials (nanotubes and graphite nanofibers);

- Other high surface area materials: zeolites, metal oxide frameworks (MOFs) and clathrate hydrates;

- Rechargeable and complex hydrides (borohydrides, alanates and amides);

- Chemical hydrides (H2O-reactive): LiH, NaH, MgH2 , CaH2 ;

- Chemical hydrides (thermal): NH4BH4, NH3BH3, NH2BH2, NHBH ;

That's quite a big question so I think you will probably need to be a bit more specific.

Florian's list above is also missing some significant classes of material, such as interstitial metal hydrides. I don't think that IEA-HIA report is the best source of information, particularly as it is now over ten years old.

I should probably correct what I said before because I've realised the category 'Rechargeable and complex hydrides' includes interstitial hydrides.

Florian's list includes only complex hydrides after that category - borohydrides, alanates and amides are all complex hydrides. That was what confused me.

Table 7 in the IEA-HIA report actually lists 'Rechargeable hydrides' as one of the four categories, with that category including 'Alloys and intermetallics', 'Nanocrystalline' and 'Complex' as different types of rechargeable hydride. I think that's a bit clearer...

In short, most metals will absorb hydrogen but different elements do so under very different conditions. Some are very difficult to hydride, others easy, but they can be combined in different ways (as alloys and intermetallics) to make practical hydrogen storage materials; however, there are so many combinations and possibilities that the situation is difficult to summarise. Important practical considerations include cost and the molar mass of the host. Mg and Ti, as you mention in your question, are good, in principle, because they are light and absorb two hydrogen atoms for every metal, but there are other candidates too.
